A Couple Hand Histories, As Promised

My table from the othere night was filled with calling stations and maniacal fish, luckily for me! I think I played badly on this first hand by not betting the turn because the villain is a fish who bets the river with nothing quite often. All comments are welcomed, because I'm not an expert.

Full Tilt Poker - No Limit Hold'em Cash Game - $0.10/$0.25 Blinds - 6 Players - (LegoPoker HH Converter)

SB: $22.15

BB: $49.45

whodatdare (UTG): $24.65

MP: $29.10

CO: $25.00

BTN: $9.50

Preflop: whodatdare is dealt 7 7 (6 Players)

whodatdare raises to $0.85, MP calls $0.85, 3 folds, BB calls $0.60

Flop: ($2.65) 8 9 K (3 Players)

BB checks, whodatdare bets $1.80, MP folds, BB calls $1.80

Turn: ($6.25) A (2 Players)

BB checks, whodatdare checks

River: ($6.25) 5 (2 Players)

BB bets $3.00, whodatdare calls $3.00

Pot Size: $12.25 ($12.25 Rake)

BB had 2 J ([2d Jd] Ace King high) and LOST (-$5.65)

whodatdare had 7 7 ([7c 7d] a pair of Sevens) and LOST (-$5.65)

Another hand wih the same villain. He's tilting because UTG out drew him for 2 pair on the river when he had TP. I was hoping UTG would stay in as he was calling very light.

Uncalled bet of $0.00 returned to BTN

In the first hand I think checking on 4th was fine. Just because the guy is a calling station doesn't mean he doesn't have a hand that beats you here. He flat calls from the BB so he most likely has a hand from one of these 4 categories - an Ace with a weak kicker, a low to medium pocket pair, some combination of connected cards, or he's sooooted. These are the types of hands that calling stations don't usually fold preflop, especially when they're in the blinds. Betting the flop is fine because you can represent the King and he folds if he completely missed (and completely missed to a calling station means he has no pair, no overs, and no draw!!). He calls your bet, but because he IS a calling station, you still don't really know where you are. He might be drawing, but he could also have an Ace that he just can't fold or maybe he hit a pair on the flop. Checking on 4th is IMO a good move. If he has an Ace, you're dodging the check raise that will make you have to fold and getting to see the river for free. The river is a brick and your check on 4th is usually seen as weakness by most bad players. This fact coupled with the fact that you know he's capable of betting this river with air makes your call on the river acceptable. You're getting 2:1 on your money and you only have to be right half the time to break even. The main thing to keep in mind is that a bluff is the only thing you're beating here. If you had bet on 4th (probably 4-6 bucks) and he calls and still leads out for half the pot on the river, can you really call that $7-$9 bet with the board showing an Ace, a King, and two more overcards to your pair? That would mean your risking over half a buyin in a situation where you could very well be beat. This is the type of situation that I'm really thinking about in my game as well, so I'd love to hear thoughts from others on this.

In the second hand you might want to consider calling instead of pushing with this flop. If the guy has been calling light he might just well call again and you can get it all-in on 4th. Your push to the re-raise screams set, so the guy would have to be crazy to call. The flop is uncoordinated enough that you can slow play the set for one more street and maybe pick up a few more dollars. Great hand though. This is exactly what we're looking for with our medium pairs!

I was torn between double barreling or checking, but since I only had a medium pair I wanted pot control onthehand so I didn't have a difficult decision later, as you mentioned also.

Once he checked the Ace on the turn I figured I was good and was definitely calling any river bet he made.

2nd hand, I didn't hink UTG would come along after the raise by the other guy. UTG would call light but he wasn't too keen to play 3 bet flops. I wanted to get someone's stack for my set, andsince villain showed he liked his hand I wanted to hang him. Do I think a call would keep UTG in? Probably. Maybe I missed some value here by shoving but I really HATE slow playing sets. Every time I do I seem to get burned.

Prelop on the second hand is bad.
